Jennifer came to me in a state of desperation. She was 42, a corporate finance manager, and by her own words, she was "falling apart."
She couldn't sleep. Not the kind of "toss and turn for an hour" kind of sleep trouble. I mean waking up at 3 AM in pure anxiety, her heart racing, her mind spinning, unable to fall back asleep no matter how exhausted she was.
She was gaining weight around her belly despite going to the gym five days a week and eating perfectly clean.
Her hair was thinning. Her skin was breaking out like she was a teenager. She had brain fog so thick she was making mistakes at work. She couldn't concentrate. She was snapping at her kids over nothing.
And here's the part that broke my heart.
Her own doctor told her, "Your labs are normal. You're probably just stressed. Try meditation."
Jennifer had already tried meditation. She'd tried yoga. She'd tried every supplement on the shelf. Magnesium. Valerian root. Melatonin. St. John's Wort. She spent over two hundred dollars a month on things that did nothing.
But she kept searching. Kept researching. Kept hoping someone would finally understand what was happening to her body.
Then she walked into my office.
After listening to her story for twenty minutes, I knew exactly what was happening.
"Jennifer, your symptoms aren't separate," I told her. "You don't have a sleep problem, an anxiety problem, a weight problem, and a hair problem. You have ONE problem that's creating ALL of these."
She looked at me like I'd just told her someone finally understood.
"Your cortisol is dysregulated."
